Laura Higgerty, MSc.

Registered Psychologist

Laura was born and raised in Hinton and developed an interest in psychology from an early age. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Alberta and her Masters of Science in Marital and Family Therapy at Loma Linda University. After completing her schooling, she returned to Hinton to work for the Mamowichihitowin Program in 2011 as a therapist. For the first six years she worked in the town of Edson and eventually transitioned to working primarily in the community of Hinton. The values of the program deeply align with Laura’s and how she wants to work with clients collaboratively to reach their goals. She believes in the balance of using evidence-based practices with the teachings of the medicine wheel and that great healing can be found in using both. To help achieve that balance, Laura is registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists and the Psychologists Association of Alberta and has certification in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, as well as completing Counseling Adult Survivors of Sexual Violence course offered by the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services(AASAS). She also stays connected with the local indigenous communities to enhance her knowledge and awareness of cultural practices. She also attends cultural training when it is offered so it can be integrated into her therapeutic practice. Mamowichihitowin means ‘all working together’ and when we do it can bring great healing to individuals and their communities. Laura believes everyone can play a role in facilitating healing and wellness and that medicine is already within. She lives in Hinton with her husband and young son.
